what if we created a whole new world and people have been forced to live underground thanks to severe weather or a natural disaster that drove them down

and another person is some retired military-like individual who moved away from civilization because of an incident that caused them to mistrust the government and justice system so they became independant

pretty much, and they're reluctant to help out but the people around them take notice of how well they're surviving or that they know how to do all this stuff and start looking to them for help.

which they give reluctantly but they constantly refuse to become a leader when the people ask. except they kind of already are

a collapse could force the group with the spelunker's group deeper into the caves but the deeper they go, the more of those dangerous creatures are present

these creatures are heat-seekers since they live underground and wouldn't have much light to hunt by.

yeah, I could see underground pools that contain some sort of aquatic creatures and some that even can glow

then there could even be a kind that bond with the people and serve as warnings when the predator creatures are around.

i would love a kind of symbiotic relationship, because the humans get rid of predators which help the animals, and the animals help the humans be alerted to predators/find more suitable places to live

I could see this happening in the military-group. while the spelunker's group notices that these creatures seem to somehow know when the nasty predators are around.

they learned how to navigate the caves, avoid the creatures, found the pools of fish and more

YEAH and this little society just sprouts up, they just get together and share stories and reminisce about their life and loved ones lost to the disaster

they just learn to live down here while they wait for the surface to become habitable again... though they realize that it might take decades for that to happen

eventually they go down so deep that sending a scout to the surface takes days

at first they send a scout out often but then not so much as they settle into this underground life

yess and they just start slowly developing this underground culture

slowly collecting random stragglers that have managed to survive somehow

there are people who map out all the catacombs and caves and what groups of people live where

some people experienced with chiseling stone may even make living places out of the caves

just little houses coming out of the walls

the military person ends up with this tiny hoard of orphaned children living with them
