By the year 3020, the Earth could no longer sustained the billions of people. From the dying greenery to animals becoming extinct, water was tainted and trash built up around them, smog covered the sky and left little sunlight to warm the planet. For a hundred years humans attempted to save their world but there were simply too many people. So the major countries spent the next two hundreds years building large ships capable of supporting thousands of people. Each ship was equipped with cold sleep capsules that would allow the passengers to sleep until they reached their destinations. Androids were left to pilot and care for the ship and its precious cargo. When one ship was fully prepared with its people, it would leave Earth to travel to a nearby star system. They searched for any planet capable of supporting them. Over a million people remained on Earth in an attempt to revitalize humanity's homeworld. There has been no news of this project being successful and no word from many of the ships if they've reached a new world to call their own.
One ship named Kibo built by the Japanese carried 60,000 people on it from various countries across the world found refugee in a distant star system on not just one but two planets. Two large cities were built on both and grew over the next five hundred years. Travel and trading between them was common until a disagreement closed those lanes. Both sides claim that the problem lie with the others but no one can remember what the issue was anymore.
« the collision
After two hundred years of feuding and fighting, something unbelievable happened. A hail of meteorites knocked one of the planets off its trajectory and sent it straight into the path of the other. They were going to collide. The issue was severe enough that the feuding stopped and they attempted to solve the problem. While they tried many solutions to prevent the planets from colliding, there was nothing they could do but hope that their similar mass would prevent one from being completely destroyed.
Their old ships were refurbished, new ones were built and they once again took to space to wait out the calamity. After the dust settled, the people were surprised at what had been left - one half of each planet still remained, drifting so close together that it could have been one. Inspired, people started to bond the two pieces together with inner supports while smoothing over the surface to make it appear natural. Unfortunately there was a great deal of debris and it left a huge fissure in the planet which exposed the molten lava that lay beneath the crust.
« after collision
While the construction of their planets was being handled over the next two thousand years, many people lived on board the ships. A proper atmosphere had to be re-established for humanity to return to the planet. Only those who had permission to go down to planet were those who worked there. All of the children are educated on the ships while some of the adults worked construction, rebuilding or re-fertilizing their new planet. Finally, in the year 2019 AC (After Collision) the ships are returning home. Children, youngsters, adults and the elderly alike have seen their first look at the planet from the surface.
Life has returned to normal and peace reigns on Ven'lin (light).
« ven'lin
After the collision, the planets had been devastated. Buildings were nothing more than ruined remnants of their past, foliage was minimal, even the wildlife was scarce, water was contaminated. Having the foresight to deal with these problems, a lot of their problems were solved by the various flora and fauna they managed to save. They first built water plants to cleanse the streams, rivers and lakes on the surface. After that machines were designed to provide an artificial atmosphere that would surround the entire planet. Then came reseeding the planet, most of this was done from the air but those who were capable started farms all over the planet. It didn't take them long to figure out that nothing would grow near the crack in the planet due to the intense heat and so they planned to build elsewhere. Once the planet was green again, animals were introduced. None of them would be familiar to the people of Earth but those who had lived on the two planets would recognize them immediately.
This entire process took a few hundred years and it was only once the planet was buzzing with life again that they started building their cities. One large city (Kibo) was built opposite of the crack and small villages can be found here and then across the rest of the surface. While certain features may remind people of Earth (green grass/plants and blue skies, one moon) there is still plenty to remind them just how far away they are from humanity's first home world. Water and clouds have a blue tint to it, perfectly healthy - just different. There are no oceans at all and lakes are scarce and small, mostly man-made. To the natives of Ven'lin all of it is completely normal.
Only three years have passed since the ship named Kibo landed on the surface and the people have had to adjust to the new life they have.
There are 412 days in a year and that's been broken down into fourteen months. The last month of the year is the shortest.
« technology
Far more advanced then it had been over 5000 years ago. While some of it was lost during the collision, others have made great advancements such as transportation and communication. Most can use ships that allow them access to the upper reaches of the atmosphere, children at taught this when they reach their teens. Children are allowed access to genospheres, bubble-like machines that can take them anywhere. If under the age of six, a parent/guardian/teacher must confirm their destination. All communication is hands-free with the exception of those who prefer the outdated systems. Books that came from Earth are rare and practically none exist from the time before the collision. Most information can be downloaded onto portable devices for easy perusing.
« lifestyle
Up until the last few years, almost all of the population lived on board the Kido and other smaller ships. Only adults were allowed to go planetside for work and most of the time, they lived there. Any child born was sent back up to the ships to live. Sometimes one or both parents would accompany them until the child reached the age where they could begin their education.
Since returning to the planet, families have been reunited but may be strained due to the separation between parent and child. Until children graduate at the age of 17, they remain in their parent's home. Upon graduation they select a job and are offered simple housing in or near the building if they wish. Most of those who have graduated select this option as they feel more estranged than younger children do.
There are plenty of jobs to go around - from educating the children to working in the fields to expanding their knowledge of technology and science. Once a month there is an open market where farmers bring various goods to the big cities and everyone is given the day off so they can attend if they wish. Birthdays are celebrated en masse one day a year in mid-spring, no gifts are given but there are festivals in the cities and towns all across the planet. Parents and children often gather to celebrate together. The other major celebration is the New Day, marking the day that they started construction on the two broken planets. No one works on New Day but instead relaxes and enjoys a light show after the sky darkens.
Wars are a thing of the past even if fighting does still happen on a smaller scale. Cooperation is key in this new world if they're going to continue to survive. Any fighting that happens is over something trivial such as domestic spats, bargaining over trades and so on.
« family units
Since the population had become such a big deal on Earth, there are laws in place to prevent overcrowding and overpopulation. It was especially important during the two thousand years they spend on the ship. A person could only have two children. This is strictly enforced even should one parent start a relationship with someone who has no children.
Marriage is very common among two people while divorce is less-so. There is also the possibility of never getting married and simply living with someone else. Gender is not an issue when it comes to two people sharing their life together. Nor is anyone required to have children. They are very open and accepting about these sort of relationships. Those who cannot have children may adopt those who have no parents with little trouble, it's not unheard of for a sibling to become the guardian and it doesn't count towards their own limitation. Therefore most family units can consist of two to five people.
« currency & trade
They have since done away with the currencies of the past and created a single new one named Meri. While people rarely actually use paper or coin, they have cards that act as cash - much like debit cards of the past. However, Meri is not the only way to handle a transaction. Sometimes trading happens between two people for the more common items. A person could trade a day's work for a small variety of foods or a place to sleep. Of course, there's always an option for trading one object for another. Basically if it exists, it can be traded for.
The only exception to this is rare, antique items. Since these are limited and can only be reproduced, it takes a great deal of Meri to purchase one should it come up for sell. If it's practically being given away - it's a reproduction.
« education
All children start their education at the age of four. They learn how to read, write, and basic mathematics at this age. Every child must attend and cannot advance as it helps to build social skills with others their age. School is attended every day but there is a half day on the fifth day of the week for six months at a time. Upon reaching the sixth month mark, children take tests to advance to a higher grade. If they excel on these tests, they may advance more than one grade.
When children reach five, they add a new course - physical fitness. At ten, they're allowed to choose which extra courses to pursue so they can prepare for their future. They can only change once after three years so they must choose carefully.
Class sizes vary depending on how many test into it, one child may excel in mathematics and science but have difficulties with reading and writing. Each child is placed according to their skills. Teachers may have two to a class depending on the size to help the students and may even have an assistant teacher who is newly graduated and planning to be an educator.
By the time the child is seventeen, most have decided what they want to do as their job. They are required to take a corresponding test a week after their birthday. Should they pass, they are automatically granted to the job of their choice. No interview is necessary.
« language
Since Earth had several thousand different languages and the ship Kibo had people from all across the world, they have since abandoned their old languages and have a single one. It may resemble something that came from Earth but is somehow completely different at the same time. Only words from the old languages still survive - such as book, ship, kibo. One person may say it in English while another uses Japanese or Russian. It all depends on what was passed down from their ancestors.
Name/Alias: Thaelin | Thae thantophobia Gender: Male Age: 19
Job: Technology (2 years) | Works under Nemeri & works for Jaelis
Physical Description: Short black hair, left eye green and right eye blue, pale skin, 5'9, skinny/thin build
History: To be honest, Thaelin's life was pretty normal for someone from his world. He was born on board the spaceship, Kibo that orbited their planet of Ven'lin. When his mother discovered she was pregnant on the planet, she eventually returned to the ship to give birth and hand him over to one of the many caretakers. Then she returned to the planet to be with her husband and her job. He was raised alongside at least thirty other children and was perfectly fine with this until the age of five. There were a lot of others who had the same life that he did but not everyone did. Thaelin learned this after excelling his first set of tests and being placed among seven year olds.
It was then that he learned that he did have parents, they just hadn't wanted to stay with him. Using the general terminals, he discovered that his parents - Masarie and Nath - were working on the planet and couldn't even be bothered to call him. When he questioned the caretaker, Keta, he told Thaelin that they have never contacted to find out about him either. From then on, he distanced himself from other people and focused solely on his studies. He swore to never be like his parents, that he would never have children or care about the planet below.
Thae's loner ways came to an end at the age of ten when Keta told him that he had a sister. At first he wanted nothing to do with her until he found out that his parents hadn't even bothered to name her. He agreed to see her at least and give her a proper name - Isenris (the word for beautiful). Upon seeing her, Thae couldn't justify giving her over to someone else to raise. While he did accept some help from Keta, Thae insisted on taking care of her most of the time. He even took on small jobs in order to get her some things that were just her own rather than something given to all children or handed out from older ones. For Isen's sake, he even opened up to some of the younger kids who became her friends.
At the age of thirteen, everything changed when a teen was brought up from the surface. His name is Anren and he was placed in several of Thae's classes. Anren was loud, disruptive and often tried to skip only to be brought by security. To Thae, he was pretty much an animal and he attempted to have nothing to do with him. When he was saddled with tutoring this animal, he was less than pleased. Anren had difficulty concentrating on studying and preferred to do anything else - including getting into trouble by going into areas they weren't supposed to. What's worse was that Isen absolutely adored Anren, often calling him big brother.
Eventually he did warm up to the wild teen, coming to understand that he had been cast into a different life altogether and had a completely different experience than he did. Something Thae came to truly understand a year after they first crossed paths when everyone was forced to disembark the ship and go planetside. What was worse was that he was expected to live with parents he didn't know at all. He was expected to live with a pair of strangers for the next three years.
Thae often let Anren led him away then, choosing the company of his single friend over that of strangers. When he knew it wouldn't be something dangerous, they would bring Isen along with them and show her the planet. His father did make an attempt to get to know his children and Isen warmed up to him eventually. Their mother was a different story though. She spent as much time away from their house as she could possibly get, only returning once they were asleep and leaving before they woke. A year later, Anren graduated and left Thae alone in his class - they saw less of each other but still had a close relationship. In fact, Thae is the one who has feelings that run deeper than friendship for the other. Not that he's said anything on the matter. He almost did when Anren proclaimed that they could live together after he graduated. Anren said he'd even support Thae if he wanted to become a legal guardian for Isen.
Two years ago, Thae took his final exams and became an adult by society's standards. His field of choice was technology and he was employed by Kibo City's main corporation. He didn't move out of his parent's house for six months only because he hadn't taken guardianship of Isen. While Masarie agreed quickly and without complaint, Nath had grown close to Isen over the last three years and she loves her father in return. He waited six months for them to make their decision, though often spent the night over at Anren's whenever their mother came home. Eventually, Isen told him that she was going to stay with their parents because she wanted to continue to get to know the people who'd given them birth. And then she leaned in to whisper that she didn't want to be in the way if Thae ever confessed his feelings to Anren. Of course Thae tried to deny it but Isen knew better. In the end, he moved out but told her that it would be her home too and Anren agreed to that.
Settling into Anren's home was easy considering he'd been over there many times before. The only time he was uncomfortable was when the Tojen's comrades came over as Thae was still not all great with getting along with a lot of people. And the members of Unit 163 could be loud - particularly Drahal who was not only a loud drunk but is a very tactile person. He also never got along great with Phiasyl as it was obvious to Thae that she has strong romantic feelings for him. Gedin was the quiet one of the bunch who was a creature of habit - sitting in the same spot, drinking the same amount and often dragging Drahal home while making sure that Phiasyl got home as well at the end of their gatherings.
Other than that, they shared their two bedroom apartment in companionable comfort. Thae took on the basic household chores such as cooking and cleaning while Andren did the shopping and heavy-lifting. His job gave him normal hours while Andren could be out on patrol at any time of the day and often had his schedule rotated with other units. He's working under Nimeri at Tyba Corp - which is owned by a man named Jaelis. Whenever they both have free time, they spend it together - Anren often dragging Thae out of the apartment on some wild and crazy adventure. Though he's learned to not let Anren fly... ever.
Two months ago he uncovered a coded file in among the rest of the Tyba Corp files. It took him no time at all to hack into it and a week to decode the information inside. What he found inside was a plot against the Council of Five, communications with a group of space-travelers that had experience in taking over other planets, and a plan to enslave a majority of the people of Venlin. There was also documents talking about a precious mineral that other planets would pay a fortune to on a excavation dig. While the substance has no value to the people of Venlin, there are others who would kill to get their hands on it.
Thae didn't tell anyone what he found - not even Anren - in fear of putting them in danger and not knowing who to trust. That is until a month after he decrypted the information, Anren took him out to an old ruins where someone had clearly excavated old relics. Their journey was fairly normal until they stumbled upon an armed group. Instantly the group started attacking and if it hadn't been for Anren, Thae would be dead. His friend had been captured in the process of protecting Thae and underwent a torture session to give up Thae's location. There was no way he could Anren behind but Thae hardly had the physical abilities to take on the group.
So he devised a plan to not only trick the group into thinking that he'd summoned more people but also set up explosions around the site. Thae lured most of the men away from Anren and snuck in to free him after electrocuting the one guard left behind. They proceeded to escape the ruin, setting of Thae's explosions to trap the group with the damage that was caused. Once out of the ruin, they continued on to their rented ship and returned to Kibo City. On the way Thae told Anren all about the information that he had found.
They couldn't remain in their apartment as someone could trace the rented ship back to Thae so they packed up a few of their belongings before stopping by to pick up Isenris. While there, he warned his father about there being danger and refused to tell him where they were going in case someone came to investigate. Thae then proceeded to steal one of the off-road vehicles, making sure that it couldn't be tracked before they left the city behind. Anren led them to a place far from the city, to a cave deep in the dense forest of Venlin. It was a place where few dared to go as it was filled with the most fearsome beasts on the planet - the Raza.
For the last month they've made their home inside of a cave, protected from the Raza by their stolen vehicle and other traps that Anren has set up. Since then they've become wanted in the city for "destroying a relic" along with "attacking and killing several Tojen". Unable to let this injustice go and incapable of letting this plot happen, Thae and Anren have set out to stop it. Gathering vital information and attempting to determine who they can trust as allies. Anren has made several trips back to Kibo City to watch his old unit members while Thae hacks transmissions going off-planet.
History: Anren was born on the surface of Ven'lin to a woman named Ladanea who worked among the wilderness, caring for the animals reintroduced to the planet. Her job was to tend to the livestock and so spent a great deal of her time fending off the predators. For the most part, she worked alone and became pregnant one night with a random stranger that she never saw again. Because she was isolated, when Anren was born, no one noticed and insisted that her son be returned to the ship. So he spent his entire life on the planet in comparison to others his age.
While his mother taught him to care for animals, he found more enjoyment out of protecting them from the predators. His education came entirely from his mother who taught him the basics of what he needed while encouraging him to do what he liked best. She even taught him how to fight and left it to him when he became old enough while Ladanea simply tended to the animals.
When he was fifteen, his mother went out to find an animal who had gotten lost in a storm and never came back. Intent on finding her, Anren started searching for her and found her body ravaged by a beast. Shortly after someone came to collect supplies and learned of both Ladanea's death and Anren's existence. The older man named Nasja took Anren up to the ship as everyone under the age of the seventeen were supposed to be in school.
He hated it there. It was confining, cold and lacked the wild life that he'd grown up in. Classes weren't all that important to him and Anren was often skipping than he was in them despite always being brought. In that first year, he met a younger boy named Thaelin and they disliked each other at first. Eventually, Thaelin was assigned to help him with his studies and the two grew to like the other even if they could never truly understand each other in all things. Unlike Anren, his new friend had never known the love and warmth of a mother or the beauty of Ven'lin. But he knew that to get Anren back on the planet he had to pass his exams and helped him with the task.
Not that it mattered since the following year, everyone was finally allowed to live on the planet. Anren's first act was to drag Thaelin out to his home only he found it occupied by someone else who had taken over his mother's job. Being unable to take it, he left behind his childhood home and got a place on the outskirts of Kibo City. The following year he graduated and became part of the Tojen (Guardians). He swore to Thaelin that when the younger teen graduated, that they'd live together knowing how awkward and uncomfortable Thae was with his parents.
